Weight Loss Operations
There are different weight loss operations available in the field. Some of them with anesthesia and some of them without. We would like to underline that not every weight loss operation requires general anesthesia. The options are Gastric Balloons, Gastric Botox, Gastric Sleeve Surgery and Gastric By-pass.
Gastric Balloons:
Main goal is making patients feel full and eat less.
Two types of Gastric Balloons are present: Swallowable and Unswallowable.
Swallowable Gastric Balloon (without anesthesia):
It is a very easy 15 minute procedure with very low complication risk. We use a special balloon which is inside a capsule (as in folded shape) comparably bigger than a pill with a very thin catheter. Patient swallows it with a glass of water and after we make sure the capsule is in the stomach with X-Ray, it opens up as soon as it contacts the stomach fluids. After that we inflate it with fluid up to 550 cc and it stays there 16 week. In this period, the patient follows a diet which is provided by our nutritionist, and because the patient's stomach is full and they follow the diet, it is expected to loose up to 20-25 kg easily in these 16 weeks. At the end of this process, the balloon disintegrates and is painlessly expelled from the body by the digestive system.
Non-swallowable Gastric Balloon (with sedation, half asleep state):
The main idea of losing weight with this type of balloon is the same with swallowable one. Difference is, in this balloon patients are given sedation, become half asleep state and the doctor performs the operation with endoscopy. Doctor places the balloon into stomach and fills it with fluid. Because the balloon is not digestible, it can stay there as long as the doctor deems appropriate after the patient's examination. This period is usually between 3-12 months. At the end of the treatment balloon is removed with endoscopy again.
Gastric Botox:
Slow down the emptying time of the stomach, applying Botulinum toxin (Botox) to the stomach is a relatively new method of weight loss based on endoscopically injecting Botulinum toxin into certain areas of the stomach. In this method, it delays gastric emptying time by limiting stomach muscle’s contraction, and the patient experiences loss of appetite; Thus, weight loss is achieved.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery (Shrinking the size of stomach):
Sleeve gastrectomy, also called a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical weight-loss procedure. This procedure is typically performed laparoscopically, which involves inserting small instruments through multiple small incisions in the upper abdomen. During sleeve gastrectomy, about 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a tube-shaped stomach about the size and shape of a banana. Limiting the size of patient's stomach restricts the amount of food they are able to consume.
Sleeve gastrectomy is by far the most used obesity surgery in the field.
At our clinic we provide our patients life long nutritionist and doctor support after this operation. We supplement patients with protein supplies which last 1 year, check their weight, recovery and health closely.
Gastric Bypass Surgery (Shrinking the stomach and diverting the digestive route):
Gastric bypass is surgery that helps patients lose weight by changing how their stomach and small intestine handle the food they consume. After the surgery, Since the stomach will be smaller, patients will feel full with less food. The food they consume will no longer go into some parts of their stomach and small intestine that absorb food. The main idea is connecting the entrance part of the stomach to the small intestine. Which can reduce the calorie intake radically. Doctor makes the decision of this operation’s application.
